A bit about me….

Hi, I’m Charlotte and I now live with my husband and family in Hexham, Northumberland, although I grew up in South London.

Birds: I have always enjoyed bird watching and now consider myself a pretty good bird listener - eg I can tell what bird is calling or singing even if I can’t see them. Birds are a free gift from nature to enjoy all year round, wherever you are. Those bird songs were known my by ancestors and I can hear them now. I think about that tangible connection.

Singing: I’m in a local women’s a cappella choir ‘Wildflowers’ where I usually sing on the Alto 1/Tenor line. Singing is great for relaxation, breathing, bonding with other middle aged ladies, memory and stepping out of my comfort zone (aka performing).

Cooking: If I can’t paint or make something arty, the next best option is cooking. Cooking gets you using what you have in the cupboard or fridge (problem solving), putting your own spin on it and hopefully creating something other people enjoy.

Walking: I love to be outside, preferably walking in the countryside where I can be my myself and just enjoy the view and the changing seasons. Recently the walks have often been research for my husband’s series of books exploring the old railway networks. It is much nicer to find a path less walked and a bit more wild and remote.

Charlotte the Artist

I have drawn, painted and made things from an early age. I was allowed to make mud pies in the garden, paint, junk model and sew. My Mum (also a teacher and an artist) knew that these things were imported and encouraged creativity.

I studied Art at GCSE, A Level and then at university, for a degree in Art and Teaching.

I have continued to paint as an adult, for my own enjoyment, to relax, to escape and as a professional artist. My favourite themes are landscapes and still life. My favourite mediums are watercolour and acrylic. My art teacher told me I used too much colour, and I still can’t resist using lots of colour in my work….

Charlotte the Educator

I qualified as a teacher in 1996. Since then I have taught in Primary, First and Middle School and in recent years I have started to teach adults and lead tuition and painting workshops. I like teaching and working with others. Having taught children I understand how to break things down simply, to encourage and support and to make learning fun, engaging and informative. I firmly believe that making art is an activity that is good for the mind and the soul. You get to problem solve, plan, focus and expand your skills, and at the same time you can relax, escape and explore a world of changing colour and texture in front of your very own eyes.

Workshops and Tuition

I offer watercolour workshops and 1-1 tuition for beginners and for people wanting to improve their technique. My workshops are fun and thematic, and they change with the seasons. Having been a teacher for 30 years I have plenty of experience working with students. My goal is to pass on skills and to provide an enjoyable and positive experience making art, encouraging creativity and giving an opportunity for you to have time and space just for you.
