My Story - Charlotte Thompson
I have always loved to paint, draw and be creative and I was encouraged to do this from an early age. It runs in the family with my sister, mum and my grandmother all being painters. I studied Art alongside Teaching and gained a BA in Art and Education at Reading University. For almost 30 years I have taught in primary and middle schools and one of the highlights has been teaching children how to be artists. When I am not teaching I like to spend time creating my own artwork, taking inspiration from the world around me. I live in the beautiful Tyne Valley, Northumberland which continues to be a huge inspiration. I’m excited to say my painting workshops are taking off and I’m teaching other people to experience the wonder, creativity and relaxation that painting brings to me.
I would describe myself as an all-rounder and I don’t stick to one thing. I predominantly paint with watercolour, but I also use gouache and acrylic, and some of my work is mixed media. I have also painted with oils and I have experimented with printing. Digital painting is another way of working which I love because it opens up new avenues techniques to apply. Some of my cards and prints have come from my digital illustrations. I use a wide variety of art processes through my teaching in school and I think my own work and my teaching intertwine, with each informing and influencing the other. I also get bored easily and need to challenge myself by learning a new technique or have a different focus in my work.
Favourite places
Northumberland, Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway feature a lot in my work. The River Tyne is my favourite haunt and I love to see how the landscape, flora and fauna change with the seasons. I often walk along the River Tyne in Hexham enjoying the scenery, birdlife and plant life.
The River Tyne
One of my favourite places for bird watching and enjoying the changing seasons of the year.
